Telstra Super Signs Charles River for Direct Portfolio Management
Excerpt from the Financial Standard highlighting Australia’s Telstra Super and its selection of Charles River IMS to automate its in-house equities, futures and options operations.
Anyone needing more convincing that big super funds are evolving into investment managers should look at Telstra Super’s deal to sign on with the Charles River Development portfolio management system.
Established in 1990, Telstra Super has 90,000 members with more than $11.5 billion in assets providing superannuation services for current and previous employees. According to SelectingSuper it’s a proven top performer rarely out of the leading pack. Its balanced option is currently ranked nine over three years, scoring a full 340 basis points above the market average.
But running a modern portfolio is not as simple as it used to be as the fund has now signed on for the Charles River Investment Management System (IMS) to implement its automated portfolio management, compliance and trading for their in-house Australian equities, futures and options management.
Telstra Super direct portfolio amounted to $800 million at end September said research group Rainmaker.
In a statement, Charles River said Telstra also plans to adopt its Financial Information eXchange (FIX) electronic trading technology.
Charles River provides technology systems for 260 investment firms in institutional, banking, hedge fund, wealth management and pension funds.
This latest move confirms that the expanding role of pension funds taking more direct control of their investments pushes them to needing the same tool as investment houses, a trend that is only going to intensify.
